Specific Project Goals

Enhance and expand opportunities for active recreation in the community.

  • Construct new fields, courts, paths, playgrounds, picnic areas, outdoor assembly areas and other facilities for general public use.
  • Provide new facilities that can be used by community groups for organized youth sports, fitness and recreational activities.
  • Provide facilities that can be used by the Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department for community recreation and educational programs.
  • Design, construct and operate the recreational facilities in a manner that maximizes opportunities for public use and maximizes the public benefit derived from park development.

Retain and enhance opportunities for equestrian activities and events.

  • Renovate some of the existing corrals, barns, and other facilities on the project site.
  • Construct access drives and parking areas for truck/horse trailer rigs.
  • Contruct and improve facilites required for equestrian competitions and events.
  • Develop staging areas and access routes to the Rillito River corridor and to other designated trails.

Respect and interpret the history of the site.

  • Preserve existing historic structures on the site through renovation and adaptive reuse.
  • Preserve existing landscape and site features that contribute to the site's historic character.
  • Install interpretive signs and displays that convey the site's history to park visitors.
  • Develop interpretive and educational programs related to the site's history.

Maintain and enhance the agricultural character of the site.

  • Re-establish stone-fruit and nut orchards within the park site.
  • Develop areas where field crops can be grown in conjunction with on-going educational and interpretive programs.
  • Construct a classroom building and greenhouse for the implementation of educational and interpretive programs related to historic and contemporary agriculture.
  • Construction of other improvements need to support the agricultural programs and facilities at the park.
